May 04 Moving DayI'm moving my blog to http://dmwashopnotes.blogspot.com/ because it offers a lot more versatility in my posts as well as design... Thank you for visiting me here and please bookmark the new link! Thanks for "stopping by the shop!" Freida April 30 Featuring "Smile Moon Woodworks"I recently visited my Favorite Sellers section in my shop - there were so many, many blanks!!? Especially for the woodworkers that I've known - so when I noticed this fellow from Connecticut that I'd not seen before, I was pleased =D It's great to have more wood artists on here, we really need the help promoting this beautiful medium! Here's a little info on Smile Moon Woodworks... April 29 Wasted DaysWell,
well, well! Ever have a day you wished you could do over!!? Oh yeah,
I'm sure you
have!lol Yesterday was one of those. I don't know how it
happened? I was sitting out here on my laptop, trying to figure out
how to add Etsy minis to my blogs and such to no avail... they just
never came out? What I'm doing wrong probably had to do with the
service I'm using or something... Annnyyyway, I was sitting here,
like I do every morning, trying to catch up. learn. improve and check
occassionally to see if I'd won a necklace from Timothy
Adam Design's April Giveaway - I didn't notice the sun flying
overhead, didn't notice the electricity had went off briefly (I'm
on my laptop, right?)
when the guys replaced the old meter with a digital one, didn't
notice that it was creeping toward 2, then 3, then 4pm until it was
time to pick up my boys from the bus stop! I wasted an entire
day, goofing on
this stupid machine!!! Aaagghhhh! It might've been alright, but I
didn't even really get anything accomplished? April 27 Shop stuff...Today I worked on the "Seascape" project. I can see that its going to take a lot more work than I originally thought - but it's coming out good! I decided not to work on the "Green Jay" frame because it wasn't working out yesterday and I just didn't have a "feel" for it today. Who knows about tomorrow -.but I think it will be better tackled when everyone's gone and I can concentrate! I'm thinking I will try to relax a little tonight and work on the "lighted castle" while I'm watching tv. It's going to make a great Mother's Day present! I hired someone to create my shop I.D. last night and so far she's made the perfect thing! I'm really excited and can't wait to see my banner! and can't wait to get some new cards printed using her design. Lots of exclamation points - l AM excited! lol Anyway, going to go for now - back to work and laundry => ttyl, and thanks for "stopping by the shop!" Freida I fought the frame, and the frame won...I guess it was yesterday now!? I just had to say, before I retire for the 'night' that I lost the battle with the framing today, just couldn't get things to work right, but will fight and win the war tomorrow for sure! It reminded me of how I tend to 'shelve' projects, waiting for the right inspiration to fix a certain problem, or make something come out the way I 'see' it... I had a conversation with my sister about that today and I think it might be worth jotting down - just not tonite... Tomorrow's another day and in all other endeavors things seem to be flowing smoothly, so I will conquer this one tomorrow! I will explain later - hopefully you'll stop by and leave a comment that you, too, suffer from 'artist's block' occasionally? => 'Tis such a lonely place sometimes! ttys, and thanks for "stopping by the shop!" Freida April 24 Perfect FramingYesterday was a banner day for me! It was my 45th birthday While this tip is pretty much scroll saw dependent and won't be useful for a lot of people, for me it was like the first light of man =D So simple, it'll make ya slap your forehead, but so dead-on reliable that it's something that will cause you to make dozens of frames just to see for yourself! lol You measure out the angle with a triangle and then using CA glue, you attach your metal(only the metal kind!) square or ruler to the board making sure you align it to the mark you've made on the board - the CA glue will hold nearly instantly and the scroll saw blade won't cut the rule, only ride along it, cutting a perfect line! After you're done with the cut, you simple pop the rule/square off of the board! I had to try it because I'm not only making a frame for the Green Jay project, but also, I couldn't believe that you could actually remove the rule/square so easily without creating extensive damage to the board?! Well it worked, and it worked WELL!! For the perfectionist I am, frames were such a pain that I hesitated when it came time to make them - now it's FUN! Hope this helps someone like it did me =D If you have any questions, write - I'll be happy to send a descriptive picture or two Stay awesome and thanks for "stopping by the shop!" Freida April 20 Love is in the air...Windows Live Spaces Well, it was a fine day and my new cockatiels were definitely feeling the Spring in the air!! I'd been eyeing the little Lutino "Petey" for quite some time and when my beloved Roo died in January my hubby decided to end my mourning with not just Petey, but also a, presumed to be, little girl he named "Cherry". She was a frantic bird and bit until the red blood flowed, but Petey had been hand-reared and was almost loving and very precocious. I was upset at first, because not only did I not want a "replacement" for Roo and had felt very guilty for even looking at Petey, but I knew that when he brought home two that I would not be able to have the loving little bird that Roo, being single, had been. Pretty soon it became obvious to me that the little "girl" that Roger had brought home was not a girl at all. She could whistle like no other female bird I'd known, especially at the young age of 10 weeks! and her coloring was so much a male cockatiel. But, the lady at the pet store insisted that Cherry was indeed a girl, and that Pete was a boy, and I decided to drop the inquisition... It would be only a matter of time before they both proved to be boys, and there was no use arguing with my steadfast husband about it! Well, when I caught them trying to mate the other day, I was the one who was fooled!lol Indeed, I was right about Cherry - all man, and proud of it! But Pete, a GIRL!!??! Oh well, what can I say - didn't see that coming! lol I realized that I needed to separate them before they became purposely intimate, as they had not truly 'sealed the deal', but my husband didn't see the harm and let them be together again =< and promptly let me know that Cherry knew what to do and had consummated the marriage! {{{sigh}}} So today, among all the other projects at hand, I had to whip out a nest box! Here's the result; not the best, but it will do for now - my little girl has enjoyed going in and out and it was cute watching them investigate the darkness within - Cherry, for the longest time hung from the sides of the cage, chirping quietly and changing sides now and then for a different vantage point. He's supposed to go in and make it ready for Petey, but I think they changed that around! lol I guess I'll have to rename Petey, but she knows that name and I would hate to confuse her? Anyway, did manage to get in some work in between putting the box together and the Green Jay is almost done -yeah! I also managed to start another burl bowl - this one is out of Chechen burl and is going to be pretty I hope => Going to call it a early night - tomorrow's Monday, everyone will be gone - pure-dee Heaven!! So I'm getting up before my usual 5am and getting at it - I'm sooo excited! =D As always, thanks for "stopping by the shop!" Freida April 19 shop updates - Green Jay finally painted! After much grumbling from my husband, the Green Jay is painted! He was appalled to find out I was spending so much time on an item I was selling for so little - I tried in vain to explain that it was my fault that I accepted the commission for so low - as I told my client, "I really want you to have this!" so I met her requirement for a piece done for that price.... I always would rather see someone have something that they will hopefully treasure than a pocketful of money!lol After all, being appreciated is.... priceless =D In retrospect, probably shouldn't have, but oh well. I have a feeling that she might not want it anyway after waiting so long. It took forever for the painting to come out right - and as always, I'm not completely satisfied, but it will have to work as I have so many others to do work for and this is setting me back terribly! It looks like the picture she chose, so what else can I hope to achieve?? In the end, if she doesn't want it, it will sell, so I'm not worried - besides, I can ask a LOT more if she doesn't! lol But, no, I do want her to have it so hopefully she will love it... Anyway, going to be working on wine bottle holders today and then tomorrow - yeah!!! the seascape lighthouse! I'm so jazzed to do that one =D Also, my oldest boy's 19th is coming up and he wants a Bob Marley, Jimmie Hendrix, and Jaco Pastorius portrait series - the patterns are almost done, so hopefully I get the portraits done by the 3rd?!?! What fun it is, to start the season behind! lol Well, it's off to work! a beeea-uuu-teeee-ful Colorado spring day! =D Thanks for "stopping by the shop!" Freida April 18 zzzzzzzzzzz....Sigh... long day - long night... I always hate to see the end of the day, I just didn't get done (never do!?) and had to spend the day running up and down the mountain - only able to work here and there in between doing things for the fam... I love them so much, but I want, no need, to create! It's after midnite and I finally got the branches painted on my jay; how can one, with good conscience, paint beautiful, creamy white maple??? It's such an amazing wood to work with, yet this time, I had to paint it - another reminder of why I love Intarsia (bas-relief marquetry) so much!! Ah, if only God had created teal colored wood - and yellow, true blue, etc... ! lol Anyway, I think I'll call it a night - I just can get the colors right without the daylight - even with my ott-light =< Tomorrow everyone will be gone from the house, and I will at least get a few uninterrupted hours! Yipee!! Hence the blog entry tonite - My eyes keep closing and my wacom pen keeps tapping the wrong things! I hate falling asleep sitting down here, but it's even worse when it happens while I'm standing up!?! Wow, I can't stay awake long enough to hit publish!!! lol Thanks for "stopping by the shop!" F April 17 website goes html! Yeah!Oh boy! =D I just found out - and on my own!? - that my main website's host is finally allowing "engineering" of my homepage! Wow, html, etc... I'll be like a kid in a candy store now =D Ever since Brian left they've been slowly making improvements, but why aren't they emailing and letting us know? But, anyway, that opens up all kinds of possibilities and I can't wait to get back and work on it. My main website gets more hits than Etsy ever thought to supply and a heck of a lot more sales. Maybe I should be concentrating on that end instead of putting things on Etsy that people only 'look at' - I'm beginning to think Etsy might just be for 'crafts', and abstract 'art' that you have to go to art school to appreciate! lol Not to diss Etsy though, it has it's purpose, just not sure I'm part of that... off to work.... thanks for "stopping by the shop" April 16 Shop Updates...Windows Live Spaces The other day the eagle I had just finished, "American Bald Eagle", sold - I was kinda hoping he'd get more exposure so I left him on my site as a "by order only"... Jim Selby bought him, as he has every eagle I've made (unless he already has it) since day one! The last one he was set to buy from me a couple of weeks ago I ended up giving to him. He's been such a good client - I even recently made his wife, MaryLou, a Steeler's helmet - and when this one was being put on his wall we noticed that it matched almost exactly the one that's in the mural his wife painted before she had her stroke. I mean almost exactly! so it was only fitting I give it to him, as it was obviously meant to be there!?! He hung it on the opposite side of the painted eagle and it sure is wonderful => Anyway, I'm glad he got this one, it has so many special pieces of wood in it, a true fitting piece for such a great art collector. My pieces hang beside very notable art and I'm truly humbled that he loves what I do! =D I've been painting the green jay for most of the day and I had to sit down finally and take a break and it gives me that chance to update the blog... My gal over on the east coast put in another order for the trout wine bottle holders. It feels good to make these for her - Lord knows that there's no profit there, but she sells the heck out of them and is so excited to have them in her shop =D I'm glad she was able to get her shop again this season. I'm going to be putting a couple of consignment pieces up in her store this year. I hope they'll do well - who knows, maybe something good will come of it!? I have a lot of photos to post concerning this blog entry, so I will put them in an album with today's date, instead of trying to insert them all in here... take a look and hopefully you'll feel inclined to leave a comment - always great to hear what ya'll think of my 'work'! Well, I'm going to get these pictures up and get back to work - Thanks for "stopping by the shop!" Freida April 14 Reducing the "Footprint"Everyone's gotta do their part - and I'm definitely no exception! All year I've been cultivating my stock of cool wood, especially this winter. I've come across many instances of such, to me, tragic waste where I was able to help alleviate the landfill overload. This always excites me! I love wood, there's just no two ways about it and when I'm able to bump up my supply of a certain species that I use extensively, I always get really excited! This year I was able to procure many black walnut trees that had fallen, or needed to be taken out - and this being my all-time fave wood it was quite a haul! There's one tree in particular that has so much feather and color - purples, blacks, golds - it almost looks like Claro! I can't wait to get it dry and on the saw => Then there were several homes this year re-doing their flooring and wowwee! You wouldn't believe some of the cherry, birch, and maple I was able to salvage from the landfill-destined bins! I still cannot believe that people throw this wood away - it's so totally usable once you plane it out!! The grains are amazing on some of this too - a lot of it being more than 75 years old... I also have some yellow pine coming from a doctor's office, that I again, can't believe I was able to get! From these great untapped resources as well as old cedar fencing and oak and poplar pallets - it's all worth gleaming from to make beautiful pieces of art => and, most of all - it's NOT going into the burgeoning landfills and burn piles, forever being lost and wasted! Also, my dear friend, who's entire 80 acre mountain was once full of beautiful Ponderosa pine, Red Cedar, Juniper, and Pinon pine that was wiped out in the Iron Mountain fire here, has benefited from my art - as I'm able to take a lot of what he's considered a total loss and reclaim lumber in the form of beetle kill blue pine, gorgeous golden juniper, and beautiful aromatic red cedar. Giving back to him too has made my soul happy - they lost so much, including 7 beloved horses, and every sale I make that contains his wood, I'm able to give back to him so that it was not a complete devastating loss. Nothing can ever soothe his battered heart when he has to look upon his grandparent's blackened stand of trees and bald mountain, but I'm glad I can help in this small way... We all must do our part - my part I get to do is full of joy, surprise, and unadulterated happy dances! Here's hoping that "doing your part" brings you at least a 10th of the butterflies it does me!! => Happy Monday - and "thanks for stopping by the shop!" Freida April 13 My letter to lawmakers concerning the new Copyright bills, "Orphaned Work"I am writing this letter to beg all the “powers that be” to not let any of the Orphan Works bills to pass through your hands! This will have devastating effects on our art world as well as ANY person that creates a photo or other simple visual work. You simply cannot allow the big businesses to destroy the WORKING copyright system we have now. Our current copyright laws were put in place in 1976 and have been working very successfully – Our country is the only one that has even thought to change it! One of the big issues is the fact that our current copyright policy states, “INTERNATIONAL LAW FORBIDS COERCED REGISTRATION as a condition of protecting ... copyright.” The United States is about to break International Law!? There is an open door to theft in these bills sponsored and financially backed by the big image companies to “legally” take any image or creation out there by calling it an “Orphan Work” just because the creator of the work either didn't know how to, or couldn't afford to, register with select companies that would be the copyright registrars. Plus, this only takes into account images registered on their system. If you have registered all your work on another system, they won't be searched here and, even though you may have spent thousands of dollars registering your creations, a new or unused directory could orphan everything you've ever created. As quoted in an article by Mark Simon on April 10, 2008, “You could see photos you take of your family and kids, or of a family vacation, used in a magazine or newspaper without your permission or payment to you. You would have to pay to register your photos, all of them, in every new registry in order to protect them. Say the average person takes 300 photos per year (I take a lot more than that). If a registry only charges $5 per image, that is a whopping $1,500 to protect your photos that are protected automatically under the current laws. If there are three registries, protecting your images could cost an amazing $4,500. Not to mention the time it would take to register every photo you take. Plus, you will also have to place your copyright sign on every photo. That's not including all your art, sketches, paintings, 3D models, animations, etc. Plus, even if you do register, the people stealing your work can still claim it was orphaned and, unless you fight them, they win. Even if you win, you may not make back your legal fees. Anyone can submit images, including your images. They would then be excused from any liability for infringement (also known as THEFT) unless the legitimate rights owner (you) responds within a certain period of time to grant or deny permission to use your work. That means you will also have to look through every image in every registry all the time to make sure someone is not stealing and registering your art. You could actually end up illegally using your own artwork if someone else registers it.” This would affect everyone, even YOU!! I hope that you can see that signing any bill into law like this would be detrimentally harmful to everyone – not just artists and photographers! I am a very small part of the 'art world'. I have 3 boys and am currently trying to establish myself in the creative world. I'm totally disabled and hoping someday to be “off of the system” and be a viable part of society again through my work. There is no possibility in the near future that I will magically become whole again. Through my woodworking I not only become an asset to society because I will be able to support myself and family, but my creative contribution to the world in general benefits us all. If it were not for the small income I generate with my work, I don't know how we would survive as a family. We could even end up on welfare – which is something I would hate with all that I am! I've never asked anything of government, but I'm begging now, to you, to stop this legal thievery... It would truly devastate our country as art and freedom of creativity is a huge part of our culture and history! From a prominent artist that we would not have some of our history had his art never had been, “Spider-Man comic artist Alex Saviuk is also concerned about the loss of copyright protection. "When I found out all the negative aspects of the new legislation, it would almost behoove us to want to do something else for a living," says Saviuk. "If we would have to register with all the different companies, we would never be able to make a living." "It would be impossible for me to register all my art," continues Saviuk. "It would put me out of business." “ There are quite a number of people out there that don't think this a “big deal” but what if we'd never had artists like Alex Saviuk? “Spiderman” is an undeniable part of our history and culture! Thank you for reading this and I will pray that you will help in this fight – it is not just my fight, it is yours too! Freida Kirkland Deer Mountain Wood Art
I would appreciate some input on this letter before I send it - does it sound okay? Did I cover everything? Thanks => PLEASE WRITE YOUR LAWMAKERS AND PUT A STOP TO THIEVERY OF OUR ART!!! April 12 sex, lies, and video tapeSometimes, everything seems like such a secret!? I just had a lady call me that I'm working on a large project for - I didn't know you were reading my blog! lol I'm always working, sometimes until 3 or 4 in the morning, trying to get the projects done that will make you all smile => I have to choose carefully what I will and won't talk about in this live forum due to prying eyes - I'm not paranoid though and have even shared with you all some of the things I'm pretty excited about, and can only hope that it's being read by people that are genuine art and craft enthusiasts who are reading all of this to see the other side of the artist they're working with, or will want to work with.... Even though I may not talk about your particular piece, it doesn't mean in any way that I'm not working on it - just that I feel it's special enough that I don't want to see it copied before you even get it! It's really a good thing => I hope that this clears up that concern; I wouldn't want anyone to think their piece is any less important that anything else I'm working on - and yes, when it's finished Carol, I'll be blogging about it for sure!!! Again, glad to know that you're reading this - makes it definitely more fun to do! and please be sure to write if you have any questions or comments - I love hearing from you all => Thanks for "stopping by the shop"! Freida Second Wolf CutIt only took 3 days to do, but the second wolf in my 'art block' project is finally cut out! yeah!!! It was only 146 entry holes, but dang seemed like 500! It wouldn't have been so bad except I had to work on it in pieces in between being, what has become the same as, a single parent. Roger's home though for the weekend so I should be able to get a lot done! :) Here's picture of the second wolf - I really enjoyed making this design, and the wolf puppies are going to be so cute, but it's 339 cuts so it will probably take me a week to do! lol In the meantime, the green jay project took a downward turn =< I was getting ready to get the branches cut out, after all of this time spent on getting the colors just right on the bird itself, and after printing the branch portion of the pattern I realized that the whole project had been cut out too small!!? I guess I didn't have the correct area checked in RapidResizer... What a stupid stupid amature mistake!! I just know she's going to say "just forget it"! But I'm still going to get it cut out today and maybe even colored now that I know what I want to do on it - she may still want it as she said she wasn't in a hurry - but geez! it's never taken me this long to produce an order!!!! I know I have to write her this morning, but I'm just not sure what to tell her - how unprofessional I've been on this one! I am getting frustrated with Etsy - I get a lot of views, but am not getting any hearts lately, comments, convos, and am pretty much ignored in the forums unless I ask a direct question...I'm not feeling the love! I just don't know what the space holds for me - everywhere else is great, but the environment just may be wrong for the work I do? I wished I knew. It's not like I need to make a sale there - in fact I am considering putting a "Vacation" sign on it, as if I sold any more 'custom' work there I'd have to decline, I'm just booked up so badly right now - and I'm already complaining that I don't get enough "creative time" because of orders... I know, that's a good thing! lol I'm just a whiny-butt! I'm not sure how to go about putting that shop on hold... I guess I'll go in the forum today and get some suggestions.... Anyway, off to work! Can't wait to get the bird re-cut and get back on track - the sun's shining and the birds are singing... all makes for a great work day => Thanks for "stopping by the shop"... April 10 New Stuff....I hope you can read the scribbling on the right - I've been trying out the Ink Blog plug-in - it's suppose to make it easier as in that I can 'write' instead of typing. The biggest problem is getting used to the slick surface - my handwriting is usually pretty nice, so it will take a lot of practice to get it looking halfway decent! I've had a little trouble trying to get the thing to recognize my writing and it's lost quite a few entries! :p I think if I keep to just putting the writing in without converting it to text I'll have better luck in not causing the program to crash! We'll have to see how it goes. The Green Jay is finally coming along; I think I've finally gotten the colors right! So it will be in the Progress photos.... I'd really like to work on it tonite but it doesn't work well unless you have real sunlight. Since Roger's been gone it's been harder to stay up - I have to get up at 5am to start getting everything organized for the boys to go to school, and I keep falling asleep with the pen in my hand! =< I'm so sleepy right now - I'm sure that some of what I'm writing is not very clear!?. Roger's supposed to be home late tomorrow night from working in Trinidad - I hope he'll be able to help me get some rest this weekend. Right now I've been trying to get everything done that I can do while the boys are at school and working late into the night while they're asleep... not working real well! Anyway, will call it a night for now - Thanks for stopping by the shop... April 07 "It is finished..."Ya ever just feel
so relieved that you let out a sigh and it felt it didn't have an end??
This is what "Mike's Summer Pasture" is like for me. I spent over a year on the thing, piddling with it, tinkering with it, agonizing over it and finally, it just comes together and , "It is finished..." is all that you can think to say about it! I thought that holding this huge panel with one hand while running it through the scroll saw and guiding it's path with the other was hard, but for some reason "Mike's Summer Pasture" just sat there, cut, but unfinished, while I tried to figure out how to complete it. I was desperate to complete it just for it's own safety as it's not an easy thing being "art" in my household! I was beginning to think that my relationship with my children would be in jeopardy if any more of their big clod-stompers threatened to shatter my hard work one more time!! Especially Austin - his impish energy was just simply drawn to this fragile thing! Often he would mischievously hover precariously near it, twirling and laughing!!? Threatened continually, I'm just so glad it's done!! Anyway, I hope my doctor likes it - I wanted to deliver it to him today to lessen the chances of something happening to it here, but he couldn't meet with me today but said he'd be up to the house because he's not been here yet!? lol I hope he knows what he's in for - we're not only in the middle of nowhere, but my house resembles the famed, "Animal House" fraternity to me! lol All these guys here and little ol' me (who works upwards of 14+ hours a day!) it just doesn't exude feminine charm! => But oh well, maybe he won't notice the mess! teehee Well, it's off to complete a bunch of Trout Wine Bottle Holders for my East Coast gal and work on a chess table that's become a bit of a enigma to me! It would seem I don't own a tool that cuts a straight line or miter accurately! =< I think my pieces might end up at Confusion Hill http://www.confusionhill.com/ the way it's going! lol As always, thanks for "stopping by the shop!" An Idea Comes of AgeSome of my nights run a little late - although this blog entry would've been done hours ago had my handwriting plugin not crashed twice!! ugh So I will type it this time and keep my fingers crossed! I'm in the shop late tonight gluing my eagle to it's backing finally! It's been 3 months in the making and I'm anxious to get it done and on it's way - I always have other projects that are in progress at the same time in an attempt to keep things from getting frustrating or boring. At this time I have a customer's Green Jay picture that is colored segmentation, a large castle which this time includes something new; lights!, a client's Nascar project, a very large Mountain Lion climbing down from the rocky terrace, a 5' intarsia mural, and a new project which has been months in the making... It always surprises me the length of time it takes after an image comes to mind and I put it in my design notebook to actually see it come to fruition! This particular idea came to me while watching "Color Splash" on HGTV - Tyler has the ability to draw a 'squiggly' line, cut it from MDF, paint it, and hang it on the wall, and it becomes art!? This had me thinking of something I call "Art Blocks" where several 'blocks' of wood, put together in an interesting grouping, with different designs/colors, can form a sort of collage art piece - and never really remains static unless the person wants it to. Of course, merely painting a block of wood different colors or such doesn't really appeal to my creative side, I always have to go an extra step, especially where it concerns the type of work I do... Recently I designed a wolf picture, where there are two standing amongst the aspen - I thought it came out very nicely but couldn't think of how to frame it. Hence, the "art blocks" idea came of age! In this new series of projects I am designing, the client has the ability to purchase one of more 'blocks' of a certain theme, adding to them as they desire, which are complimented by 'generic' blocks that could go with just about anything, yet lend a certain cohesive quality to the whole - in such a way, the client 'designs' their own wall art! I'm so excited to get this online, but it takes time to put it all together - right now I'm cutting the 3rd picture in my wolves series - the second has 339 separate blade entries, so it may take the longest to create - which is a single wolf profile and is a little less complicated(only having 146 entries) than the other two. I still need to design the 'generic' blocks, but at least it's getting there!! I'm so excited about this project and can't wait to start on the next series! Each series will consist of 3-4 different pictures to choose from and the frames can be done to work with the client's specific decor - even the frame's design is really unique and is perfect for the collage style => Anyway, that's one of the new items coming up and I hope to post pictures soon of their progress... Doing this sort of project, that isn't an order, and stimulates my creative eye, is a big part of keeping the flow happy and exciting. In the midst of working on orders it is essential for me to have a outlet to help deal with frustrations and the ever-foreboding "artist's block"! By working on several project simultaneously I'm able to have something fresh to do that helps me resolve the problem or creative block I might be having with the current project. Such is the case with the Green Jay project - getting the colors correct and applied perfectly has been an issue on this one. I always download tons of reference photos for every project I do, to maintain a level of accuracy that my client's expect from me, and it seems that every picture of this bird is a different tint, even slightly off and it degrades the whole project! I think I finally have it right, but I have to sand off the experimental paint and redo the whole bird. I'm just glad she's not in a hurry for the piece!! It's usually the shaping that's time-consuming, but not this time! Anyway, tomorrow should be a productive day for the Jay :) So, I'm going to go for now and finish the glue-up on the eagle and maybe I'll even get a couple hours of sleep! lol For now, that's "what's happening in the 'shop'".... |
